A wrong step might be your best step
2023 / 4 pieces / 30 seconds
Malpaso (which literally means “false step”) is a Chilean brand of pisco for which we created four pieces, each telling a different story: an explorer searching for treasure, a diver photographing the ocean floor, a skydiver jumping from a plane, and a brave knight preparing for battle. What unites all these stories is that their protagonists all “take a false step,” which ultimately leads to a better result than what fate had initially planned for them. This is where the campaign slogan appears, telling the public that “A wrong step might be your best step.” We created this advertisement to promote Malpaso’s new bottles, each with a specific color. We associated the blue bottle with the knight, the red one with the skydiver, the green one with the explorer, and the black one with the diver.
01 CONCEPT ART
The character designs were created with the idea of using basic and simple forms for their anatomy, even with facial elements that are easy to abstract, resulting in unique and expressive characters that easily connect with the audience.
02 STORYBOARD
In the storyboard process, we focused on using wide shots and close-ups to enhance the humorous narrative. Wide shots helped show the scale of danger against the exaggerated reactions of our characters, while close-ups allowed us to enjoy facial expressions for comedic effect.
03 STYLEFRAMES
With environments rich in natural elements, like those found in forests, jungles, and the ocean floor, combined with unique and eye-catching character designs, the goal was to create a visual outcome that stands out due to its bright, attractive colors, providing a fun experience for the viewer.
04 PROCESS
Using the storyboard as the base, in the layout phase, we created the correct compositions so that the animator could work from them, with the goal of achieving a result with comedic touches.
05 ANIMATION
Thanks to the flexibility, both bodily and expressive, of the characters, it was possible to develop an animation focused on a cartoon style. This approach allowed for exaggerated and expressive poses that enriched the visual narrative, emphasizing the comedic nature of the story and creating a more dynamic and entertaining connection with the audience.
